Song of the Week: Term 3 Week 7 - Fix You

Thanks Cold Play, what an incredible tune!

Chinese Dance Video for Week 3 :)

This weeks dance we practised!

Olympics Inquiry in Te Kākano

The stage is set in Rio for the 2016 Olympics, so what do we all know about this event???

We decided it would be great to look at what makes the Olympics important, how do we recognise the Olympics is happening, what sports take place at the Olympics, who are our Olympiads, what symbolises the Olympic tournament...

We liked the idea of the torch being a symbol of the Olympics for the ancient and modern games, so we each made our own that we are going to use to officially open our own Yaldhurst Model School Olympic celebrations with!

We also investigated facts around the Olympic rings and found out that Pierre de Coubertin created them in 1912 for the modern games.  He represented the 5 major continents involved and chose colours that are found in most flags of the countries participating.

We like the symbol so much we all made our own!

Book Week Guest - Helen Taylor the Illustrator

What a privilege to have a real illustrator visit our school during Book Week.

Helen brought along some amazing examples of her work and explained how she comes up with her superb ideas!

Helen visited every class in school and shared her skills with us.  We asked her lots of cool questions which she said was a great experience for her.

Thanks Helen :)

Matariki Class Item - Thursday 9th June :)

As part of our Maori celebrations, Te Kākano sang and performed 'Tirama, Tirama Matariki' to the tune of 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star'!

The star constellation Pleiades, known as 'Matariki', appears in the sky at Dawn during the Maori New Year which started on the 6th of June this year!

Also known as The Seven Sisters, Matariki symbolises hope and prospects for a year of plenty and good things for everyone!

Happy Matariki :)

Aladdin Was Fabulous!

He's behind you...

We were treated to  a great performance of 'Aladdin' as presented by the second year students from The Hagley Theatre Company based at The Open Stage, Hagley College.

We watched the story unfold around Aladdin, his mother, the Princess, the Sultan and wife, their servants, the Sorcerer, the lamp and of course the Genie! (Who had a very cool dance every time she was summoned from the lamp!)

The troupe engaged the audience who got very involved in the event :)

We also had the chance to ask any burning questions after the performance, to find out about learning lines, creating costumes, make-up techniques, stage cratf and set building!

Can't wait for next year's performance...wonder what it will be?

Swimming in Pyjama's!

Today was our last day with our swimming instructors and they planned for us to have some great fun together :)

"Come in your Pyjama's and see what it is like to be in water WITH some clothes on!"

It was so much fun!
