Number Smarts!

As part of showing our smart, Mrs T wanted us to share with you how great we are doing at ordering our numbers.

We chose the lolly stick number game to order numbers between 1 and 20! We are very proud of our hard work :)

Sharing our Online Learning

Te Kākano have been super busy this week! We have seen so much awesome learning happening away from school and in so many ways.

Lambs, Skinks and Plovers have all been a part of week 6 alongside getting ready for Fathers Day too!

Ice cream, cookies and slices have been baked. Pounamu green stone has been found and heaps of amazing LEGO creations have been designed, built, broken and rebuilt!

Google MEETs have happened daily and we have all shared our news. Our Covid Levels have moved from Level 4 down to Level 3 which has seen some of our friends going back to school too!

Mrs V and Mrs T have loved seeing all the work and Mrs Royfee, Mr Robertson and Lynda have been amazed on MEET to see and hear everyone's news and ideas.

I have created a file with more photos on for you to enjoy :)

Structured Literacy - The Science behind Reading :)

Structured Literacy may well be new terminology for some of us but the idea that the way we learn to read is scientifically proven will not be. We know so much more about a learners brain and its functions.

Researchers are flooding the globe with 'why' it is the way to go for so many learners.

This short YouTube offers you an easy to understand but informative overview of the importance of the early literacy skills we are explicitly teaching - in simple terms - Reading is NOT caught, it IS taught :)

Max and his dad shared,

"Today I went for two bike rides with Finn, Mum and Dad.

I also made Mud in the Garden next to my trampoline.

I have been practicing reading and writing my heart words."

YMS Art Celebration 2021

YMS was very proud to showcase our whole school art celebration.  Everyone worked super hard to present an amazing range of art with many items relating to Matariki, the Maori New Year.

We opened the event with our fantastic Kapa Haka supported by our kaiako Matua Anton and Mr Robertson. Senior pupils did an awesome job of welcoming and closing procedures. The whole school performed four waiata including Matariki Macarena dedicated to the nine stars of Matariki (Pleiades)

Miss Chinnery designed and created a really neat programme of events that the audience could use as a 'Gallery-Guide' which detailed what each class had been focusing on.

Installations were set to view in every teaching space and visitors were invited to wander to each space and meet the artist's and to chat about their work.

Ms Lange organised a 'Silent-Auction' with some excellent donated artworks  displayed in the school office area.

She also set-up a 'Guess-Who' line art gallery which allowed everyone to guess which of the ten artists did which work! The person who guesses the most correctly wins an art pack! We had line-art donated from What Now presenters, Crusaders and staff - AWESOME!!!

Enjoy viewing some images from the day - a massive thank you to our amazing community for supporting our lovely wee school's event :)
