The Power of 'S'...

Te Kākano enjoys a literacy rich environment through print, sharing and visuals.

We promote and support a range of early literacy skills including oral and written phonics, decoding, whole word reading and skills that transfer to our writing and story work :)

We love our 'Poem of the Week' which is based on a letter of the alphabet. We work through the alphabet during the year to learn each letter name and sound, a poem based on alliteration and rhyme  plus alphabetical order and the associated sign language for the letter amongst other things!

We stick a copy of the weekly poem into our Poetry book so that we can share them with our whānau too!

Here's the power-of-S!

Celebrating Us :)

At Yaldhurst Model School we look for any ways that we can notice and celebrate achievements and successes.  We are YMS HERO's.

H = Healthy Individual  E = Enthusiastic Learners   R = Responsible Citizen  O = Open-Minded Explorers

There is nothing we love more than to see something cool happening and recognise it.  Every one of our tamariki belongs to a HERO House.  Blue = Hillary, Green = Edger, Red = Rutherford and Yellow = Ormsby.

We have HERO cards that the pupils are awarded when we notice something great.  These add up for the individual but all cumulatively for the HERO house they belong to as well :)

Another way we celebrate in Te Kākano and Te Pihinga, is to have a 'Junior Hui' together where we learn to sing our National Anthem using NZ Sign Language and we hand out HERO and class certificates.

Our akōnga love receiving a certificate but really importantly celebrating when a friend gets one too!

We expect ALL our learners to be YMS HERO's and this is huge focus on daily life around our school :)

International Language Week :)

Kia ora, Talofa, Bonjour, Welcomme, Hi there...

In Te Kākano we have been using languages from around the world to greet each other and answer the daily roll. We have been counting to 5 in Te Reo Maori, Samoan, Fijian, French, Spanish, German, Japanese and Chinese!

The tamariki wanted you to hear some of their new languages on a video and 'Hey Presto!' - here it is :)

Enjoy!

Ka kite, au revoir, Sayōnara, Zāijiān :)

Eye-solation Award :)

Our amazing Senior Council organised an amazing 'Take-part' event open to all our students during Covid Lockdown.

Rimu class set up competitions each week that students could participate in.

Once we got back to school the team worked hard choosing the best entries and deciding on who earned the prizes.

Please enjoy our recordings of the procedures! Level 2 did not stop us!
