Writing is Great in Te Kākano :)

WONDERFUL WRITERS

As part of our class approach to Writing, we make available, heaps of things that our children can use to scribe on.

A favourite at the moment are our 'Magic Writing Sheets' which are like huge white boards that can be used on any flat surface.  The children use them to write their names, common words, copy out poems, tell their own stories - the list is endless!

Here are some photos to show you what's happening :)

"Look I did 'mum' and 'on' Mrs. T!"

"I wrote my name on the sheet, I will do more!"

"I have written 'Maddy I love you Emma and Mrs T and Bella', that's a lot of good words.  I will do some more good words!"

"Mrs T, look at my awesome writing - I've got 'I pat my cat' and 'My mum and dad' and I've tried to do 'Maths Whizz' (Mes Wz)" - "WOW! Shjon, your writing is amazing today - ka pai!"

Great job Mykiala - you have done a fabulous job writing all those words!

Working with Dad :)

When Laura came into school today she spent the start of the day working with her dad, Cliff, to create her name using the Maths Peg Boards - what a great job you did together!

"Look Mrs. T, me and dad made this!"

Song of the Week - Week 10 - 'Geronimo'

Dog Safety Day!

Chris and his awesome Liver Spotted Dalmation, Baxter, came and delivered a totally awesome Dog Safety lesson to all our Junior pupils.

The team really made us realise how important it is to be responsible for our dogs.  It's our job to look after every aspect of their lives.  Mika volunteered to demonstrate how to clean up after your dog...as Jedi said "It's droppings" by picking up 'Plastic Poo' in a bag and then disposing of it properly.

We learned about how important it is to provide shelter, food, fresh water and toys to stop them getting bored, bored, bored!

They also taught us to be aware of meeting strange dogs and how we need to behave near them.

If the dogs on their own - leave them alone!

Walk around them, don't run away from them and if they are protecting their property use your voice to shout "Go Home!"

Chris took off his school bag and held it in front of him as a 'shield' to protect himself, a great tip ...just in case!

They finished by showing us the right way to approach a dog who is with it's handler.  Travis got the chance to approach 'Buster' the ferocious stuffed Schnauzer... it 'growled' at him until he asked Chris if he could come and touch him. Buster loved Travis!

We have to remember:

1 - Ask the owner if it is OK to pat the dog
2 - Listen for the reply "Yes" or  "No"
3 - Approach the dog from the front with your hand like a loose fist or a 'stone'
4 - Rub the dog on the chest NOT the head - some dogs do not like having their heads patted as they think you are trying to be it's boss!!!

Remember - "Chest is Best" :)

Some photo's to remind us of a great day out exploring and enjoying our wonderful city; Christchurch!

Everyone tried their hand at the mechanical fountain!

Imagination Station was awesome - EVERYBODY built something!

Are you this organised at home Lara?

In line with the theme of the day, Mrs White had time to create a wonderful Lego butterfly :)

Mrs. T started to create a Dr Who T.A.R.D.I.S. (but ran out of time and blue flat 8 bricks!)

Great job Jorja :)

Alvin and Lili worked hard together and were proud of their inventions :)

Engineers of the future perhaps?

Fantastic Faces :)

Our PTA school disco is fast approaching, Friday 26th June, and the volunteers who are doing 'Face Painting' on the night, needed to have a practise before the event - Te Kakano obliged with willing customers :)

Katie explains where different worms live in different layers of the soil!

These worms live in the top 6 inches of the soil,

...these worms live in the deep, deep soil!

Vanessa and Anna get stuck in creating worm houses.

We had great helpers with us, thanks to everyone who came and helped us :)

Making worm bedding with newspaper, water and healthy bacteria!

"Just choose 5 worms for your worm house"

Take care of your worms and make sure you know what to feed them :)

Tiger Worms need water, air and food to survive!

Items on the menu

Kitchen scraps (all fruit & veggies), crushed egg shells, tea bags, coffee grounds and filters, potatoe skins, chopped garden wastes, manures (not de-wormed, chock), paper napkins, shredded newspaper (non-glossy), egg cartons. Chopping up stalky bits like raw cabbage or broccoli will speed recycling, as will blanching in hot water. Microwaving potatoe skins will discourage sprouting from the eyes. Only add aged dry grass in very thin layers. Garden waste is fibrous and slow to decompose – Add in smaller amounts compared to food scraps (2:1).
Think of paper as bedding material – fiber for the worms – it’s very important to add regularly 1:3 to food (i.e. dryer fluff, vacuum bags, hair, toilet rolls).

Items off the menu

Citrus skins, onion-skins, dairy products, spicy foods, bread/pasta, meat – that’s the HARD STUFF. It takes up precious space and will decompose slowly or smell. Worms won’t thrive on this food. But if you have a larger worm farm, Tigers can recycle this material in moderation. Do not put anything sharp in the worm farm (fish bones, rose clippings). Seeds will not be killed in a worm farm, and will sprout later in the soil. Never EVER feed worms weeds like oxalis, convolvulus, ivy or twitch.
