Lest we forget...Real Heroes from our own Whānau!

We are so proud of every brave soldier who gave their life then to ensure that we were safe and secure today!

Lots of our forces personnel sacrificed so much for our future generations and many did return home to their whānau always remembering the friends they lost in battle.

One of our class has one of those Great-Great Grandfathers who were incredibly brave and lived to tell the tale.  Mr David McCormick - 2nd Lieutenant, was a very brave man indeed.

He was a decorated soldier and his medals were brought in to class today to admire.

The Cross is called the 'Military Cross' and is awarded for extreme bravery.

Thank you for sharing these incredibly precious medals with us today.

  1. Hi Tē Kakano,
What a very special thing for your tamariki to be able to see, touch and hear about. I can see that there is one very proud student. I wonder how many other whanau across the school could share something special like this?

  3. Hunters great Granddad has some medals from his service but they are in Tauranga with his daughter. I thought I might’ve been able to post a photo on here but it doesn’t look like I can.
Our children are so lucky that their grandparents sacrificed so much for them that hopefully that won’t have to go to war.
Thank you for sharing your great great grandfathers medals with the class Abby. Very special indeed.

  4. I just asked Hunters great Auntie what her Dad did in WW2. She said he served in Egypt making maps for the soldiers.
Hunter has loved making maps since he could hold a pen. I wonder if the map making gene got past down to Hunter? What a lovely link for Hunter to learn about his Great Grandad.

  5. Kia ora Erica,
What a fabulous fact to know about your whānau. My stepfather was a code breaker during WW2 and may have used some of your relatives maps? You never know!
I agree with your comment about Hunter's love of maps. I have two on my fridge!
    Thanks for your comment.
    Cheers,
    Te Kākano

    1. Hey thanks Koromiko!

They were really heavy and special and the ribbons were old. We will ask Abby's whānau your question.
Has anyone in your class got war medals?

      Bye,

      Te Kākano :)
